  • Project description
The Ecuadorean Amazon Region is suffering from widespread deforestation. In this community REDD+ project, deforestation is planned to be reduced in close cooperation with the local communities. The 30,000 hectares of forest in the project area belong to three Kichwas (or Quechuas) communities. Each community has divided their land into small farms, managed by the family that inhabits them. Every farm consists of a patch of agricultural land and a patch of primary forest. This primary forest is degrading as a result of selective harvesting of trees in the region. This project aims to avoid deforestation and enhance carbon stocks through the implementation of improved agricultural and agro forestry techniques as well promoting sustainable forest management. The resulting avoided deforestation will translate into carbon revenues, which, in turn, will provide an alternative source of income for the Kichwas communities.
