  • Project description
Chile’s landscape in the south of Santiago is known as “secano interior” (interior dry-land area). Once a forested area, it was cleared for crop production in the 19th century and land became highly degraded. Fundación Chile works to develop a model of forest securitization that would promote: - Improvement in the productivity of degraded lands through reforestation; - Participation of land owners to generate economies of scale for land restoration activities; - Incorporation of state-of-the-art silviculture for improving forest growth. Project is planting only two types of tree species, both of which are non-native. Project is being implemented with assistance from Chilean forestry companies. Fundacion Chile, a Chilean non-profit, created SIF (project proponent) as a private company to manage the leasing of private lands for plantation forestry. The forestry companies implementing the plantation planting and management are FSC certified.
