  • Project description
The project will comprise a total of 820 ha of land that is currently, as it has been for centuries, under extensive grazing by beef cattle. The land cover prior to project implementation consists in native grasses kept short by grazing, and virtually no trees. Forest plantations for obtaining high-value timber products and for sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, will be established by Posco Uruguay S.A. Forests will be based on Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus dunnii (both non-native) plantations in 30 year rotation. The objectives of the project activity are to obtain knot-free, high-diameter logs suitable for sawmilling or veneering and to sequester CO2 through afforestation. Rotation length will be 30 years, a practice very unusual in Uruguay, where eucalypts are normally grown for only 10 to 15 years. Trees will be replanted after clear-cut harvest. An Environmental Management System will be implemented by the project participant, and practices will be compatible with FSC standard.
