The Rio San Juan Reforestation Project consists of a community based reforestation effort within the Rio San Juan region of Southeastern Nicaragua. The project groups small-holder landowners into a reforestation and agroforestry effort utilizing predominantly native species in regions where infrastructure is low and opportunities for economic development are few. The project spans 35 years and covers 2,500 ha of deforested and degraded land within the buffer zone of the Indio Maiz Biosphere reserve. Premium cacao, beans, native bamboo, plantain, serve as the agroforestry crops.
