- Project descriptionThe Dja Biosphere Regional REDD+ Project is a 1.2 million hectare avoided deforestation, agroforestry and reforestation project in and around the 620,000 hectare Dja Biosphere Reserve. The Dja is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the last areas of forest in west-Central Africa that remains relatively untouched by man. However, its unique biodiversity and ecosystems are threatened by deforestation and poaching. Such activities not only threaten the wildlife within the reserve, but also threaten the traditional way of life of itinerant Baka communities that have lived within these forest for thousands of years. The project will work with local communities to strengthen the protection of the reserve from outsiders; develop sustainable agroforestry practices and alternatives to deforestation and poaching; and reforest at least 5000 hectares of deforested land in the buffer zone. The project is an integrated land management strategy incorporating REDD+, reforestation (A/R) on degraded land, and agroforestry. The project will primarily conserve undisturbed primary tropical forest, but will also involve the reforestation of about 5000 hectares of deforested land with native species (and potentially a small proportion of exotic species). The DBR project aims to reduce deforestation and degradation and encourage an increase in carbon stocks within the 624,000 hectares of reserve, as well as reduce deforestation/degradation and reforest areas of a 15 km buffer zone surrounding the park equating to 604,500 hectares. In total the Dja Biosphere Regional REDD+ project will conserve and/or rehabilitate 1,228,500 hectares of forest in the Congo Basin. In addition, the project incorporates a comprehensive integrated land management strategy benefiting the Baka (traditional forest dwellers) and Bantu communities living in the region, as well as a research facility twinned with an educational eco-tourism lodge. Ultimately GGC (project developer) hopes to provide a sustainable model to nest within Cameroon’s national REDD+ scheme.
