  • Project description
As part of the project bamboo plantations will be planted and managed under the Bamboo for Africa (BFA) Programme using funding specifically earmarked by sponsors for carbon offsetting. Plantations will be on community-owned, marginal lands and small holdings on the outskirts of townships across South Africa. The majority of available land has been acquired through South Africa’s land reform process but is underutilized due to lack of investment capital. As part of the project, sponsors looking to offset their carbon footprint will fund the planting of the bamboo plantations. The beneficiaries of the project will be community members from the surrounding townships who will receive training on the care and maintenance of the bamboo. Further training will be given on harvesting practices and the manufacturing of home crafts using hand tools. The BFA Programme will therefore be a Corporate Social Development, Black Economic Empowerment and small-scale Enterprise Development project.
