- Project descriptionThis is a pilot project under Fiji's national REDD+ strategy. The first proposed activity is sustainable forest management (selective harvesting) in Mataqali's forests, but this is not likely to enhance enough benefits as logging companies would find it difficult to access those remote areas. Another option is the conservation of forests to enhance carbon stocks and to offer a viable alternative to logging, and the development of a land use plan. A number of surveys have been carried out to establish project baselines against which to assess REDD+ activities. These include: a forest carbon survey, a biodiversity survey, a land use survey, a socio-economic survey, and a cultural mapping survey.
