  • Project description
The project is located in an area where logging by communities was the main activitiy. The project aims to help communities to switch from logging to forest preservation thanks to a forest conservation initiative financed through: a) grants for project development; b) payments for ecosystem services for implementation and on-going management. Activities, involving communities as much as possible, include: - Minimal timber harvests for local housing, canoe and cultural needs. - Conservation management of protected forests - Community-based monitoring of carbon stocks - Governance of project implementation - Land-use planning to ientifiy drivers of deforestation and to reduce their impact - Management of project finances. - Energy infrastructure such as biogas - Inshore marine conservation The project may also include additionnal activities such as afforestation/reforestation and community agroforestry. The project is expected to serve as a model for further implementation of REDD+ both at national level and in the Pacific (Vanuata, Fiji…)
