  The Yasuní-ITT Project is heralded as an innovative way to preserve Amazonian forests and mitigate climate change. The Ecuadorian government has proposed to keep the 846 million barrels of oil reserves located in the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) sector of the YNP underground indefinitely, the equivalent of 20% of the country’s oil reserves. In exchange, the Ecuador government proposed that the international community make a financial contribution equivalent to half of the profits that would be generated if the country did indeed exploit these oil reserves. In August 2013 the president of Ecuador announced the cancellation of the project due to insufficient financial contributions from the international community.
