  • Project description
The project aims to bring at least 800,000 hectares under effective management by 2015, to avoid emissions of 10 million tons of carbon dioxide over five years, to protect critical watersheds and areas of high biodiversity value (including habitat of 1,500 orangutans), and to create improved economic outcomes and opportunities for communities living near forests. The expected activities are: - Capacity building at institutionnal level, to support sustainable land planning and carbon accounting; - Development of tools for a better access to information and data, to facilitate the decision-making process. - Emissions reduction activities such as reduced impact logging, oil palm swaps and improved management of protected forests. The Berau program will also develop financial incentives and contractual arrangements for concessionaires to move towards improved management, certification, and marketing of sustainably harvested wood.
