- Project descriptionThe programme aims to strengthen the national REDD+ process through the piloting of different approaches to participatory forest management, such as Joint Forest Management (JFM) and Community Based Forest Management (CBFM), in order to demonstrate a variety of solutions that can lessen the drivers of deforestation by involving local communities. The project is expected to involve the establishment of at least 700,000 ha of Participatory Forest Management Areas (PFMA). The programme will encompass a number of key approaches to support REDD+ readiness in Zambia. For example by: i) conducting research and policy analysis to facilitate a dialogue between stakeholders that can inform the National REDD+ Strategy; ii) building capacity of civil society to engage with REDD+ and promote community rights to manage and benefit from resources; iii) building capacity of the Forestry Department to support community management of forest resources and the implementation of performance based programmes; and iv) by reducing forest carbon emissions through improved forest management and the development alternative or improved livelihoods for local communities. Furthermore, the programme aims to generate information on JFM and CBFM that can inform national policy and legal reform processes, and if appropriate, advocate and lobby for their approval/adoption into national frameworks. Implementation will take place on state forest reserves, wildlife management areas, and customary lands in collaboration with the Forestry Department, the Zambia Wildlife Authority, and traditional authorities and leaders.
