  • Project description
The Vjosë-Nartë A/R project is part of the broader Italian ACAP - Azione Comunitaria per le Aree Protette dell’Albania (Community Action for the Protected Areas of Albania) project. This initiative, funded by Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (AICS), the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, aims at preserving some Albanian protected areas, created after Albania entered the European network of Natura 2000. In this context, the Vjosë-Nartë A/R project, wants to address the CO2 emissions reduction goal, by increasing the carbon stock in the Protected Landscape of Vjosë-Nartë through A/R activities. In order to achieve the objective, 9’302 trees have been planted, in an area characterized by native vegetation, which is nowadays sparse, due to environmental extreme events occurred in the past. After these phenomena, the natural regrowing struggled to be accomplished and hence four different indigenous species of trees were put in the ground: • Pinus halepensis: 4’604 specimens • Pinus pinea: 2’420 specimens • Populus alba: 1’143 specimens • Laurus nobilis: 1’135 specimens The project is expected to remove 722 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in the Protected Landscape of Vjosë-Nartë, in a temporal horizon of 20 years. However, this project has been thought as a first small instance of future reforestation activities in nearby areas.
