  • Project description
La Moskitia is one of Honduras’s poorest regions, and it is primarily inhabited by the Miskitu. Historically this indigenous community has been socio-economically marginalised, which has been amplified by poor access to adequate healthcare and education. In 2015, approximately 1 million ha was demarcated and titled to the Unity of the Miskito People (MASTA), the Miskitu’s territorial authority. The Miskitu’s newly won property rights over large tracts of their ancestral territories can be instrumental in securing a sustainable livelihood for over 60000 people. However, much of this land has been seriously degraded on account of centuries of unregulated forestry and livestock production. REDD+ projects have enabled many Mesoamerican indigenous groups to secure sustainable livelihoods. However, a recent study suggests that the Miskitu lack the technical capacity to implement forestry practices and adhere to REDD+ projects1 .
