- Project descriptionThe project comprises a total of 4,691 ha of land with a history of agriculture with intensive tillage or grazing by beef cattle, activities that have caused severe soil erosion and degradation. Forest plantations for obtaining pulpwood and sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere will be established. These plantations are part of a silvipastural system. Forests will be based on Eucalyptus globulus plantations; plantations will be completed by year 8 of project and forests will be replanted after clear-cut harvest. An environmental management system will be implemented, and practices will be compatible with FSC standard. All properties will be certified by Forest Stewardship Council, currently, more than half of the sites are already certified and the other half is in the process of being standardized for certification. The project is expected to reduce cattle emissions by feeding the cattle with an improved diet, while maintaining or even increasing the level of livestock production, in spite of a reduction in the grazing area due to afforestation, and providing socio-economic and environmental benefits. No carbon credits will be claimed for the reduction of livestock emissions.
