  This project aims to protect both highland and lowland corridors in the Cross River Gorilla landscape in order to effectively manage unprotected forests, and the ecosystem services they provide, thus securing local livelihoods and preserving important carbon sinks. Other project objectives include: strengthen management of existing protected areas; conducting feasibility study, estimating potential emission reductions; reducing deforestation. The projects are targeting the parks as well as the surrounding “supporting” areas, aiming to increase the size of the buffer zone around the parks, which will become the “core zone”. Local communities are expected to benefit from “cash payments” or other “transfers”. The aim is to sell the carbon on the market. Some disputes between conservationists (project implementers) and local communities have been reported.
