  • Project description
The GEF project aims to support the Government of Cameroon to: strengthen its capacity on the ground for participatory planning and management of selected core areas; to design and test a livelihood support mechanism that provides immediate benefits to the local communities; and to monitor long-term the quantity and quality of the forest protection areas supported by the project area. Project objective is to establish a core Protected Area within the Ngoyla- Mintom forest, through an approach based on land use planning and fostering public-private partnerships. The project invests in: capacity building in sustainable management, biodiversity conservation, strengthening the rights of local people for community based natural resources management; and improving the livelihood of local communities, forest dwellers and vulnerable groups whose livelihoods depend on the natural resources of the Congo Basin. Significantly, it is anticipated that the project will secure wide stakeholder support for more conservation oriented forest management than would be possible in the without-project scenario. The GEF financing will add value through providing the funds to prepare classification documents and manage core areas for conservation and low-impact community use, thereby securing key corridors that link other existing Protected Areas (three adjacent). Government of Cameroon sees Ngoyla Mintom as a priority site for potential REDD projects and the area therefore serves as a laboratory for designing and testing such mechanisms.
