  • Project description
The April Salumei Sustainable Forest Management Project is the first UNFCCC (REDD) forestry pilot project in Papua New Guinea and has been validated against the requirements of the CCBS and VCS. The aim of this Project is to protect the forest and biodiversity of the Project Area whilst providing important source of income for the impoverished landowners that reside within it. The Project also aims to improve wellbeing of local communities in the Project Area through the development of viable sustainable agriculture opportunities; as well as by improving access to healthcare, education and infrastructure; while preserving the local communities’ rich cultural traditions and customs. The project fits both IFM and REDD scopes: 7,640 ha will follow an APD (REDD) methodology and 196,703 ha will follow an IFM methodology under VCS.
